The miracles of faith are not impossible when you believe in the mystery of a place called Hagigadar, where the deepest prayers to God are fulfilled. Christians from all over Europe pilgrimage to this miracle Armenian monastery, as an expression of their deep faith towards god and renewal of their covenant.
Being an old Armenian community, the Armenian-Romanian family is proud of their Armenian heritage and culture. Settling here after the fall of Ani, they built churches to remind them of their faith and their home. The last church was built in 1915 to show the world the might of the Armenian Christian faith that never fades in spite of genocides and calamities. Today this is the Diocesan church of the Romanian community. Hagigadar is one of the many buildings Armenians built on this terrain.
Hagigadar, which means the answer of requests, is the oldest and the only Armenian monastery in Europe built in 1512 by Armenian merchants. This year in August 12, the community is going to celebrate the 500th anniversary of this Holy place. His Holiness Karekin II, the Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians, is going to visit the monastery to re-consecrate it.
There will be a pilgrimage to this Holy place during the celebration of the 500th anniversary and everyone is welcomed to join the Armenian-Romanian family.
“There are several reasons why this event is important for the Armenian-Romanian community and for all the Armenians,” said Bishop Datev, the Primate of the Diocese of the Armenian Church of Romania. “First, this place has an exceptional meaning as it is the only Armenian monastery in Europe. Second, during all these 500 years there was never a time when the prayer or liturgy stopped within its walls. Even during the communism era the monastery was open and functioning fully. And finally, it is not only an Armenian but also an all-Christian holy dwelling. Christians from all over Europe, from Catholic, Orthodox or Evangelical world come to this place for a pilgrimage.”
There are many written and oral records witnessing about the miracles that happened to people after they pilgrimaged to this place. Their deep desires, prayers, came true, healings and other miraculous events happened to believers here.
Even the history of the monastery is miraculous. Two Armenian merchants traveling to Austria for business stayed at this place. They had miraculous visions all night and they promised to build a monastery on that very place if they had success in their endeavors. Their prayer came true and they erected the building as promised. Little did they know at that time that this monastery would gain a reputation of a miraculous site.
Today, after 500 years, the monastery is still a miraculous place where pilgrims don’t stop coming and prayers don’t stop being answered. Everyone is welcomed to join the upcoming festivity.
